Looking for a film and driving me mad, please help!

Man from England/US/etc travels to China/Japan/Asia for trade, through snow and a long and difficult journey. He sees a local girl and falls in love, but never speaks to her and goes home. He goes back and sees her again, but she can’t be with him because of her father maybe. I think he goes again a 3rd time. Possibly told through flashbacks, while he’s in a fancy garden as an old man. Set historically - Edo period Japan, or similar.

I thought it was a Leo film, but can’t find it on his filmography. Definitely English language film. Think it’s past 20 years or so.

Any pointers much appreciated!
