The story was about a married couple that hates each other. They both hire a hitman (the same one) to kill their spouse. He decides to give them a lesson, I think?

And it's not The Ref, War of the Roses and Blood Simple. It's a TV movie from late 80s/early 90s.

is there any chance it wasn't a hitman? I have been searching hard too and haven't found anything similar

Not a hitman but a burglar criminal involved with a couple.
