Asian drama movie from the 90's or 2000's

Hi, guys, I am looking for a movie that I already looked on the previous site but without any success, It tells a story about an Asian divorced couple. The mother lives in a apartment with her little child (I am pretty sure it was a girl, but I could be wrong.) I Think the father has a new family already. The day of the child birthday party, when everybody is in the apartment (I am not sure if the father actually went to the party) The mother goes to the balcony of the apartment and throws herself from there, killing herself, out of nowhere. I saw this movie on cable on a channel that aired foreign movies and most of them kinda artsy. This one was not artsy but very dark and melancholic. They could be Japanese, Chinese or Corean, but my best bet is Chinese. I am almost certain it was a Drama movie, not a Horror/Thriller one.

Can it be one of the stories with “The Joy Luck Club”?

I will look into it and come back if it is what I am looking for. Thanks! Edit. I saw the trailer and some videos and it a Cate Blanchets movie and it is in English. Mine was Asian and no joy and luck, just doom and gloom... Not this one, for sure. But thank you very much!
