Early 90'S Vampire Priest Film At A Monastery

Film from the early 90’s, I believe, where a priest at a monastery in (Mexico?) is bitten by a vampire but then refuses to feed on others. There is a bad vampire who feeds on the nuns. The good vampire priest guy finds a woman and falls in love with her but keeps the fact that he is a vampire from her. The bad vampire grows jealous of his friend falling away from him and eventually bites the woman so that he can have them all come together as a group of the same. This causes the good vampire to track down and kill the bad vampire. There is also a scene where they show a woman being burned at the stake on a hillside I believe. That’s about all I remember except that it looks like it took place before the 1900’s and it was definitely hot and took place in the desert.

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066516

That doesn't look familiar at all. I also do no know if that is in English and the film I am looking for was. Thank you for attempting to help though!

Could it be the Unholy or the Convent? I haven't watched either in many years so I forget all the details and imd it is kind of limited information.

@afamouspetty, I've seen the Unholy a few times and The Convent was a film I had previously came across on this journey to finding this movie. Thank you though!

Could it possibly be this one? It’s more obscure, it does have a girl burning at the end, monastery, vampires…

I'm pretty familiar with that one and that's not it either. I appreciate you trying. I was just thinking about this film again the other day and I still can't remember anything else about it.

dracula rising 1993?

digging deep again.
i watched the trailer, it has her being burned at stake and him coming years later for vengeance…i know different a bit, but even talks of monastery, but not mexico/latin country…

First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is defeinitely it! Second, I am looking through the keywords on the IMDb page and no wonder it wasn't popping up to be honest lol. And I did notice in the synopsis, that they used "burned her as a witch" instead of "at the stake" which was probably another reason. You rock! I am totally going to rewatch this movie now! The other thread looking for this film will be happy to know too, I'm sure.

Could it be “Priest (2011)”

Great movie, but definitely way too new. What I am looking for was most likely early to mid 90s.

90s Vampires?

I wish it was that simple. The one I am trying to tack down is one of those obscure films that may have had a cult following if enough people ended up seeing it, but it somehow flew under the radar.

we are for sure priest was a known vampire and it is at a monastery? just trying to narrow my searches on imdb. could it be early 2ks at all?

Definitely not Priest and yeah, I'm positive that it was older than that. It didn't have the budget that Priest had.

hey man, my bad for wording it wrong. i meant are we sure the priest in your film is known as a vampire throughout? it was in a monastery for sure?

Yeah. I remember those scenes pretty vividly, just never caught the title of the film when I watched it.

the poster a few questions below looking for same film. does anyone remember when exactly they saw it and where? did it mix current day and the old times?

I didn't see this. Sorry. I believe that the entire film was in old times. I faintly remember a narrator in the very beginning that began the story but I can't be for certain. And sadly I don't remember where I saw it exactly.

Could it be The Laughing Dead from 1989?

Not Laughing Dead but it was definitely close to the aesthetic of that film. And probably around that budget.

Sad to hear it is not the one. Might be useful to go through 1980s and 1990s vampire films on this site: https://www.flickchart.com/Charts.aspx?genre=Vampire+Film&decade=1980

Not vampires, but maybe this:

Nope. Not that one, but the look of that film is pretty close. I remember there being a lot of sunrise scenes where the monastery was in silhouette.

does anyone remember when exactly they saw it and where? did it mix current day and the old times? do you remember the cover or poster? nudity?

I never saw the cover art. That I am sure of. I caught it on TV back then. I believe that it was all in the past. I could have even been post 1900's and looked like it was older because of where it took place and the fact that the village wasn't modernized yet. I have been searching for hours for this again with no luck what so ever. I remember nudity but very faintly. The bad vampire feeding on the nuns may have had a little nudity involved there. While I really feel like this was a film, it may be possible that it was an episode of a series, but I am almost certain it was a movie.

I also just remembered there was a heavy use of an orange lens filter. Similar to the kind used in the third From Dust Till Dawn film.

I am digging more, but also reached out to a vampire movie review blog. This seems findable, just haven't found right words yet

Thank you for your help. I would love to watch this film again if we can track it down.

I have looked through vampire in plot as a drama tag, but nothing so far. i am half thinking someone wrote the plot ambiguously.....then again, "witch" may be the key

i am half thinking it may not be vampires but maybe another entity… let us try

meridian

From what I remember, there was very little creature design to the look of the vampires in the film. Pretty much basic makeup but they still looked very much human. No beastly looking things that I can remember. Also, Meridian is a good one. Thanks for reminding me that it exists. May have to watch that soon, but unfortunately that is not one either.

black sunday?

i am digging hard again…several possibilities to come

I would say it is definitely in color and not in black and white and much newer than that one. From what I remember the film was a 90's film but it could have been late 80's or early 2000's as well. Thanks for trying and looking forward to the other ones you have coming.

midnight mass?

could the film have any cars/modern stuff in it?

No modern cars or anything like that. The entire movie took place in the monastery with the exception of that flashback when the woman got burned at the stake. I don't believe there was even any paved roads.

This sounds so much like Interview with the Vampire. But protagonist isn’t priest. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) - IMDb

It had nowhere near the budget that Interview had. And I re-read my original post and it kind of does sound like that but definitely not that film. It was not a film that saw a wide release. Thanks for attempting to help though.

ghouls (2017)?
i know this is newer, but has tons of the hallmarks you described…was dubbed in english too

https://www.reddit.com/r/HorrorReviewed/comments/bwhqoo/ghouls_2017_vampire/

That is definitely too new and the film I am searching for is for sure in English and I am almost positive that it takes place in South American or possibly Spain.

That is a bummer. I have been searching on and off, an hour or so each time, since you posted and still coming up empty. I am going to take a break to rethink and hit it again next week.

the monk

seriously, this might be it

If this is really the right movie, it is no wonder that it was so hard to find it, because, as I suspected, the word "vampire" is not amongst its IMDb keywords. The interesting thing is that as far as I can recall, I searched the IMDb keyword "monastery" for the 90's time period, but for some reason this movie did not show up in the results. Maybe because beside "monastery" I selected another keyword from the list IMDb search offered and this other keyword was not amongst the movie's keywords and the filtered search showed only the results that had "monastery" and this other keyword together?

I read the detailed plot description for the movie on Wikipedia. The year, monastery, priest, Spain, love between the priest and the woman were all correct. But according to Wikipedia, at the end of the movie it is not a woman who is burned at the stake, but a man, the main priest character. And most importantly, the Wikipedia plot summary does not mention any vampires, so these two parts in the question were misleading. I think everybody concentrated on the vampire plot point, but according to Wiki, it seems that there are no vampires in the movie? No mention of a vampire, let alone two.

So I also checked out the Wikipedia plot and the IMDb page and also was able to track the film down. I don't think this is it but it is pretty damn close to so many of the plot points that I listed. As @casspir said, the woman was not burned but a man, and I very much so remember a woman in that scene. While I don't think this is it, I am not positive. So I am gonna give the film a watch probably tomorrow and see. Thank you for all the time and effort you are putting into helping me find this. I know this movie exists. And it really blows my mind that it is eluding us this much.

@z0ne_tripper, according to your description in your question, the vampire plot point is a very important part of the movie, so I assume that this part, the vampire(s), is correct, you remember this plot point correctly. I am very well aware that memory can play tricks on people and people often seriously misremember details in a movie or mix up movies, but your description suggests the vampire part is accurate?

@casspir, I definitely remember vampires. If not vampires then then they were demons that drank blood lol. @VHS_Lives, I got a chance to check out The Monk today and that isn't it either. There were some similarities though. I am going to explore this idea of them being something else that feeds on blood instead of the word "vampire". "Entities" is a word that comes to mind. I also think I remember exactly where I saw the movie. I believe it was about 5 years ago and on one of PlutoTVs movie channels. I could be wrong, but this seems correct to me. I doubt that really narrows it down but yeah

@VHS_Lives, Apparently you can only put 10 comments in one post. But I am right there with you lol. It’s driving me nuts. I would say that if the genre isn’t horror it would be drama or thriller. Definitely a slower paced film with only really the main 3 actors speaking and the other extras are the nuns/missionaries that don’t speak English. There are also some people at the burning at the stake on the hill but I don’t recall them speaking in English either. The film takes place mostly in various rooms in the monastery and now that I think about it, here is a good detail. I remember the evil vampire hanging out in some sort of cave like tunnels toward the end of the film. If I recall that is where the protagonist kills him (Don’t quote me on that last part).

now the tunnels is interesting. i have run across one or 2 like that, but more contemporary setting of sorts. any chance it could be more present day-ish?

also, i looked through all 500 pluto horror movies, but nothing. gonna try thriller.....

@VHS_lives, It's hard to date the film exactly because of where it took place. It was a small town in what appeared to be Mexico or somewhere in South America. Their buildings and technology wouldn't be up to date the same way it would be if it was in a more urban area. My bet is that it takes place somewhere in the early 1900's.

have you had a chance to post to reddit or stackexchange yet? even the vamp blog didn't know. I keep digging. i have relegated to tv shows and mini series now. this one is killing me. i dug through all pluto movies too...a little tubi just in case too

@VHS_Lives, I have been pretty busy but I will post there soon. And Tubi, it could have actually been Tubi as well. I just get that feeling like I put it on as it was playing live and missed the very beginning but watched the rest.

Maybe one of the Subspecies?

It ins't any of the subspecies films, but the film does remind me of them somehow. Perhaps the fact that the film was made in the same decade or the amount of budget the film had. I am really not sure what it is. But sadly, it's not that either. Thank you for attempting though.
