The film tells the story of war in medieval times where at the end of the film the main actor flees with his troops using horses through the valley, but there are already enemy troops ready to ambush using ballistae.
The main actor’s horse was then shot so the main actor was trapped, because he was trapped the main actor then committed suicide by raising his sword.
At the end of the film it is shown that the entire film story is from a book someone is reading.
"La Chanson de Roland" sounds similar, although it isn't possible that his horse was shot (I don't remember similar scene in a book). Although it is possible that movie contains similar scene.
