I remember a film where the crew of a space freighter set out on their mission. Most of the crew went into hibernation/suspended animation until their turn to take over the running of the ship, which only required two crew members. Next thing is that the next two crew members, a young couple who were keeping their relationship secret from the company, are woken to find the ship on the edge of space, many many years later, with the previous two crew members missing. The ships computer had taken over but as the ship was now almost out of fuel had woken these two.
One of the members of the previous watch had seen and pulled in a piece of “space junk” which turned out to be infected with some virus that sent the crew mad, unless they reduced the temperature significantly. This reduced the virus to a dormant state but could not be eliminated. The piece of “space junk” when opened had the stars and stripes inside and was a NASA probe.
A ship on exploration came to the rescue but could only take those crew members still in hibernation capsules, these not being infected, and these were transferred by “slinging” them across space between the two cargo bays. The two that had been woken had to remain on the ship. They set up a quarantine signal of lights to warm any one else not to board the ship.
The last shot was the two of them in the window of the ship as it receeded.
