This movie is not it. The mother was having an identity crisis and decided to leave. I don’t think she intended to leave for good, but, she did not give information about her whereabouts. She did end up living with a family or an open minded couple. She did seem to begin feeling better about herself I seem to remember, but, it seems I remember by the end of the movie she needed more time. I remember the mother was a dark haired woman.
The movie is similar to the premise of a recent series on one of the pay movie channels.
Definitely before 2016 I am certain. Your suggestion was 1996, I wonder if that is in the neighborhood of time.

No. The movie was not a comedy. Thanks just the same. I remember the mother was having an identity crisis. It was not a comedy nor was it sad or traumatic. Maybe for the family she left. I think she left a note she would return. But she ended up meeting a couple that were free spirited and sorta perfect for her to stay with safely as she sorted things out. She even partied with them some.
