Struggling to remember the name of a film I saw back in the late 80s possibly?

Hi all, I’ve been racking my brains lately trying to remember the name of a film I watched back in the late 80s I believe? It was set around the WW2 period I think and it was about a young lad called John who was possibly an evacuee. He lived out in the country with his grandpa and they used to go fishing at a remote woodland lake amongst many other adventures I’m sure. He was out one day in the woods when he met a young girl who was running really fast through the forest looking for her lost dog. At first he seemed like he felt somewhat threatened by her stumbling onto his patch but eventually they became good friends and enjoyed exploring together etc. I think they had a fall out one day and the lad was out wandering on his own when he stumbled upon a man who was fishing at “his” lake. He asked the man where his float was but he grumpily replied “I’m not using one!” He proceeded to hook into a nice carp and the lad John was really impressed by this! Later near the end the lad and the young girl were walking along a track when a fighter plane came down and fired a load of bullets in their direction and unfortunately John was hit in the leg by a piece of shrapnel or something? I’d really appreciate if anyone could maybe help me identify this film as I’d love to see it again! Hopefully the info I’ve provided helps somewhat? Many thanks guys

Is it Johnny got his gun?

Hi, no it definitely wasn’t this one. If anything probably not made quite that far back I’m guessing? It was in colour, I suppose it didn’t really have constant reference to the war throughout the film as it was mainly about the lads life and experiences in the countryside etc.
I remember the lad and the girl stumbled across a badger set and went back early in the morning and watched the badgers playing etc. Just wish I could place this film! Thanks for having a go though. :+1:t2:
