The main character is an American or British soldier on a mission in some poor country ravaged by war, perhaps in the Balkans, but more likely in Africa or the Caribbean. He meets a local boy (I think the boy was African American) and there is a scene where he smuggles him in his car and tells him to hide when they pass a roadblock. Then he meets a nurse or doctor with whom he has an affair, and there is a graphic sex scene between them. Then the soldier drives over a mine or his car is hit by a missile and we see that it is turned upside down. The car had a distinctive white superstructure on the roof.
My friend watched the movie between 1997 and 2001. The film is set in after World War II. It definitely contained a strong intimate scene between a soldier and a doctor or nurse in which both were shown completely naked and having intercourse face to face, as if squatting or sitting, on a bed and then on the floor. The soldier was also probably involved in some shady business.
